What conventions do you usually work?
Portland Tattoo Expo, Eugene Tattoo Convention
Where did you apprentice?
I learned the skill of applying my formal education of drawing and color theory to skin through tattooing by working aside a few great artists in Vancouver, Wa. It wasn't a typical apprenticeship but really just learning how to tattoo while working with other tattooists. Patrick Spatters, Tom Ingram and Pigpen Spear were a few tattooists that helped me along the way.
How did you get into tattooing?
I started out as a body piercer and after working in a few shops I was often complimented on my drawings and paintings by fellow tattooists. After much encouragement, I decided to begin learning the skill of tattoo application. I wouldn't trade my job for any other at this point and I hope I continue to grow and progress as an artist and tattooist.
What inspires you as an artist?
I really love working with color and seeing how color contrasts and compliments itself. Here in Portland we really have a beautiful Fall season. I often am inspired by the colors of Fall, deep reds, bright oranges and yellows and dark browns are some of my favorite colors to work with and they're really abundant during the Fall in this beautiful region. It isn't surprising that I do most of my drawing, painting and tattooing during this time of year.
What tattoo artist do you most admire?
After tattooing in a booth next to Kyle Cotterman at the Eugene Tattoo Convention in 2009, and admiring his art and what he does as a tattooist, I have grown to appreciate him the most. Not only is he one of the hardest workers in the industry but he's extremely innovative and just a color theory genius. Some day I hope to be tattooed by him.
Have you tattooed any celebrities?
Before someone gets a tattoo, what advice do you give them?
Placement and size/proportion are extremely important in the tattoo process. I often try to help people choose designs and color schemes but most importantly I help advise them on where and how to place the piece. Tattoos need to fit muscle groupings and have to have relative size to the area in which they are placed. Big tattoos for big places and small tattoos for small places. Also I advise them to get plenty of rest the night before and eat a hefty meal before the appointment.
Is there anyone that you would like to tattoo?
LaMarcus Aldridge was a patron of the Barbershop we are located next to. He often would walk past and peer in through the windows. Always wishing he would pop in and get some work from me, he often would just pass by. I'm a huge Portland Timbers and Portland Trailblazer fan so I'd love to do business with people from either of those teams.
What kind of tattoos do you look forward to doing?
Some of my favorite styles of tattooing that I often look forward to doing are any that involve bright, vibrant color work with dark vague backgrounds. I wouldn't actually say that I have a particular style that I look forward to executing but as long as it involves some depth and substance and I get to use some creative ability and utilize my brain, I'm generally excited.
Is there a tattoo that you haven't done yet that you are dying to do?
I've always wanted to tattoo the Johnny Depp piece from the cover of the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas movie. I love that movie and the artwork on the cover and in the inserts is just amazing.
