08.03.12 :: Tattoo Artist, Tattoo, Freshly Inked Magazine, Vol. 2 Issue 1, Jef, La Boucherie Moderne

Jef

WRITER Shannon Moran

What year did you start tattooing?

The first tattoo I did was last century! About nineteen years ago!

How did you get into tattooing?

I could never have imagined doing another job. Tat- tooing is not a job to me; it’s just fun. When I was six years old I saw a guy with tattoos and I said—I will draw on people!

Where did you apprentice?

I have had no apprenticeship, just the guidance from three French tattooists, “Claude,” “Oeil,” and Steph- ane d’Avignon, all from France.

What conventions have you worked at?

Have you won any awards? I’ve been to a lot of tattoo conventions with my best friend and business partner, Kostek. We have done many all over Europe, even some over the ocean. I have some awards that I have won while at conventions, but you know, when something is brand-new, everybody is amazed.

What inspires you as an artist?

I am inspired by everything, especially street art.

What sets you apart from other tattoo artists?

Maybe price, ’cause I’m cheap!

What other mediums do you work in?

I used to spend time painting, but now I have no time to do anything other then tattooing.

How do you describe your style?

I developed the way I tattoo out of boredom and necessity. It’s really boring for me to work classically or traditionally—it does not appeal to me at all. I’m not good enough to work in a Japanese style, and I think tribal work is too ugly to do ... so I made my own style.

What tattoo artists do you admire most?

Because of the evolution of his own style... Bugs!

Before someone gets a tattoo, what advice do you give them?

Think before you act! Tattoos have been done for people all over the world for a very long time; in our stupid society people just think you’re an asshole because you have tattoos. I don’t mind because I am a tat- tooist, but if you’re looking for a job that could be another story, especially if you’re young.

Is there a tattoo you haven’t done yet that you are dying to do?

Something more dada. I really love the dada style and would like to work more with it.
